Roofing Trends for 2022

roofing innovations

As the pandemic slowly fades away and restrictions have eased up, many industries and consumers across the world are still being impacted. For the roofing industry, the latest topics and trends are:

  • Customers want environmentally friendly and sustainable roofs
  • Labor and material shortages
  • Continued technology developments and usage

Labor and Material Shortages

Over 80% of contractors are facing a shortage of at least one material in their business. Out of those contractors, almost half say the shortages significantly impact their projects. The customers are also affected by the shortages because of the increase in cost, the impact on the timelines for the projects and the lack of product options for their project.

Many roofing contractors have been trying to avoid further shortages by stocking up on materials as much as possible. This is very costly because of the rising costs of materials, and the customers are seeing price increases because of this.

Like many other industries, roofing contractors are finding it to be more and more difficult to find skilled workers. In fact, almost 90% of contractors have reported that it is highly difficult to find workers who are experienced in their field, and 35% of those have had to turn down jobs because of the lack of employees. The fluctuations and uncertainty of the pandemic paired with the fact that skilled trade jobs are not considered to be good careers have greatly impacted many industries, and will continue to impact them for quite some time.

Environmentally Friendly Roofing

Eco-friendly roofing systems are beneficial to the environment and the consumer in several ways. Because these roofing materials are sustainable and recyclable, they don't add to all the roofing waste currently in the landfills. These types of roofs also lower utility bills. There are some potential negative aspects of having one of these roofs installed. The initial cost is high, we never know if the materials will be available, and they take longer to install. The most popular types of environmentally friendly roofs are:

Solar Roofs

Because solar roofs use the energy from the sun, homes don't rely on the traditional power grid and are able to conserve energy. There are two ways to implement a solar roof, both of which have the same benefits: solar panels or solar shingles. The panels are much larger and some people don't like the way they look on top of their homes. The solar shingles are made from rigid materials such as tempered glass and perform like asphalt shingles but also create electricity.

Cool Roofs

Cool roofs are designed to absorb or reflect energy from the sun. Indoor temperatures are more stable with a cool roof, and buildings will stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter without having to adjust the thermostat much. When a cool roof is installed, the roofers paint it with a reflective coat. Color can be added to the coat, allowing customers to choose from a wide range of colors that will complement their home.

Green Roofs

Green roofs are a great option for people who want to help fight climate change. Also called garden roofs, they are covered in plants. They provide the most benefits for large cities with very little plants or vegetation. Green roofs' plants provide shade, pull heat from the air, and lower the temperature of the roof's surface.

Synthetic Roofs

As mentioned before, synthetic materials are much more environmentally friendly because they can be recycled and don't contribute to waste in landfills. The synthetic shingles are made from very solid and durable materials and are available in numerous sizes, colors, and shapes. They're also very affordable.

Architectural Roofing

Architectural roofing systems are becoming more and more popular because they are sustainable, aesthetically appealing, durable, and increase curb appeal. The most popular architectural roofing trends are metal roofs and flat roofs.

Metal Roofs

Metal roofs have become popular because they're made of recyclable materials and reflect light. The also give homes a very sharp and sophisticated look. They last for decades with proper maintenance and come in a wide variety of colors and styles.

Flat Roofs

Flat roofs are typically found on commercial buildings, but some homes look great with a flat roof. Traditional roofs require gables, dormers, hips, and pitches while flat roofs don't. They are easy and quick to install, and provide a great level surface for a garden top or solar panels.

Technology Usage

Roofers are continuing to grow their use of technology in their work. Drones are becoming more and more popular because they allow the roofer to show the clients any damage before they get started and the progression of their work. Customers love drones because they can get a full picture of what they're paying the roofers to do.

Another trend with roofers are storm and hail tracking apps. They help roofers stay ahead of the incoming weather, develop potential new business, and make educated guesses on where the next weather event will happen. Being based in Nashville, we know all too well about the constantly changing weather, and the use of these apps helps us pinpoint areas where homes have received hail, heavy wind, or other storm damage.

This year has already proven to be challenging, and contractors across all industries will have to continue to navigate and adapt to it. At Nashville Roofers, we strive to stay on top of the trends mentioned above and any others that develop as we continue to deal with the challenges of the pandemic.
